floor staining project: to replace an old, dilapidated bedroom closet in a 1907 Queen Anne Victorian home. On thing leads to another and after removing the wall of the closet and adding a floor where there was none, the first challenge was to match the color of the new oak flooring to the old oak flooring.

The first attempt to match the old and new floors failed. Instead of using an oil based stain, we opted for a water based stain as that formulae is less toxic. Only, the water based stain can never achieve the warmth or richness of the oil based tone of the original oak floor

Only, even with using the oil stain, trying to match a new floor to a floor that was probably last finished in the 1950's did not make sense. Instead, sand the old floor and apply a fresh coat of stain to both floors.

We considered three possible stain colors: Natural, Golden Oak and Provincial

Natural is too light and too red, Provincial too dark. Final color: Golden Oak.

Please note that the company wants you to be aware of the limitations of digital color samples.

The contractor pointed out that the floor had been sanded several times before and that this was the last time it could be sanded without nails becoming exposed.

Until this much of the floor was covered, we were still unsure if we has selected the correct color. However, at this point, we were assured the Golden Oak (oil base) was a good choice and later we will stain the front rooms this same colors.
