collaborative exhibition by French Artist Régis-R
June 4 – July 23, 2010.

Visiting French artist
Régis-R, known as “‘The Prince of Plastic,’ will join Creative Growth as a visiting studio artist for the month. During Régis’ time at Creative Growth, he will bring his practice of sculptural “object sampling” to the Bay Area --- scavenging recycling bins and dumpster's for discarded colorful “American” plastic...”

“The colors are vastly different from the plastic found in his native France”.
– Quote from cgac straight to the bone exhibition notes.
However, I talked with Régis and he did not think there was any significant difference.

“Régis-R traveled around Oakland and Berkeley on his
homemade bicycle, scavenging recycling bins and dumpster's for discarded, colorful American plastic. Régis' eco-conscious way of life and obsession with post-consumer materials has been put to use at Creative Growth, designing on-site, sculptural works with Creative Growth artists:

Born, trained and currently living in Paris, France,
Régis-R studied architecture and design at the National School of Decorative Arts. Taking a departure from the minimalist designs standards of his time, Regis's work remains committed to expressing poetic, everyday magic, turning our trash into flamboyant masterpieces.

Over the years Regis' work has shifted to larger scale
installations; recent projects include a permanent
installation at Mama Shelter hotel, Paris, designed by
Philippe Slarck and a solo exhibition at the Pompidou
Centre.
– quote from cgac written introduction.

“Lots of my treasures come from streets, second hand shops, industrial design
leftovers...I keep everything, I store everything. I spend lots of time archiving my
stock. I was a stockman in a shop once, so I had to organize a lot of stuff,
maximize space as much as possible.

Straight the bone means ‘let's go to the center’, the essence. Let's get rid of
the futility, the inessential. It's also partially about actual bones, because I did
use the skeleton form for some installations. So there's that additional reference
to my own work.”
– quotes from Régis-R interview with for cgac.

insects, chandeliers, light-up gas cans – this is artwork
with a message about giving attention to overlooked
materials, excessive consumerism, and getting ‘straight to the bone’ of what art-making and creating is all about.”
– quotes from Régis-R interview with for cgac.
